Small Business 401(k) Plan Advisor NJ

If Any of These Sound Familiar, You're in the Right Place

  • You own or manage a small business with a 401(k), SIMPLE IRA, or SEP — and you're not sure it's set up correctly
  • You're paying too much in plan fees and don't know how to benchmark them
  • Employee participation is low and you're not sure how to improve it
  • You've wondered about your fiduciary responsibilities as a plan sponsor and whether you're covered
  • You received a notice about RetireReady NJ (or a similar state mandate in CA, NY, or VA) and aren't sure whether your current plan qualifies for exemption — or whether it makes more sense to set up your own qualified plan
  • You are overdue for plan benchmarking — the DOL recommends reviewing plan fees against comparable plans at least every three years, and many small business plans have never been benchmarked at all
  • You want a better plan for your employees — and a better retirement outcome for yourself

Independent Plan Review Built Around Your Business

A plan sponsor review starts with the basics — fees, investment lineup, participation rates, and whether the plan design is actually serving your employees and your goals. From there, we look at what's available to you as a business owner, including plan design options, contribution structures, and the fiduciary protections that can reduce your personal liability.

Scott E. Jones BFA CPFA® CRPC® RFC® is a fee-based, fiduciary advisor affiliated with Osaic Wealth, Inc., serving business owners and plan sponsors across New Jersey and several other states. As a Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor, he works independently — not tied to a recordkeeper, fund company, or plan provider — which means the review starts with your interests, not a product shelf.

FAQ

What does a fiduciary plan advisor do for a small business?

A fiduciary plan advisor works in the interest of the plan and its participants — not a product provider. Services may include reviewing the investment lineup and fees, evaluating plan design, supporting employee enrollment, and helping the plan sponsor understand and fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities under ERISA.

How do I know if my company's 401(k) fees are too high?

Plan fees should be benchmarked against comparable plans of similar size. Many small business plans carry above-market costs because they were set up through a payroll provider or bank rather than reviewed by an independent advisor. A fee benchmarking review can identify whether your plan is competitively priced. The DOL recommends plan sponsors conduct a fee benchmarking review at least every three years as part of their ongoing fiduciary responsibilities — and many small business plans have never had one.

What is RetireReady NJ and does it affect my business?

RetireReady NJ is a state-mandated retirement savings program that requires eligible New Jersey employers to either offer a qualified retirement plan or automatically enroll employees in the state's IRA program. Employers who already sponsor a 401(k), SIMPLE IRA, or SEP-IRA are generally exempt. Similar mandates are active in California (CalSavers), Virginia (RetirePath Virginia), and New York (NY Secure Choice). If you've received a mandate notice, a plan review can clarify whether your current arrangement qualifies — or whether establishing a qualified plan makes more sense for your business and your own retirement goals.

Is there a cost for the initial plan review?

The initial consultation is complimentary. It's a conversation about your plan's current structure and what options may be worth exploring — with no commitment required.
